SuEllen Hamkins, MD, is a psychiatrist, author and founding member of the Mother-Daughter Project, a community of women and girls that developed powerful, practical ways to help mothers and daughters stay connected and thrive through adolescence. Hamkins has given numerous presentations for parents and psychotherapists around the world, focusing on mothers, daughters, their relationships and the kinds of communities that nurture them. As the psychiatrist for the Smith College Counseling Service from , SuEllen offered consultation to over a thousand women ages 16 to 23 to help them resist and overcome problems such as anorexia, bulimia, depression, anxiety, trauma, assault, and self-injury.

Talking to your kid about sex can be daunting. So we asked the experts how and when to cover everything from sex and puberty to gender identity and consent. Lindsay Kneteman September 24, She told herself that, when it came to how to talk to kids about sex, she would be open and honest. Now a mom to a month-old and a two-and-a-half-year-old, King wants to keep that promise.





The reason mothers find it difficult to help is their anxiety holds them back. Not because I needed the information, but because I craved to bond with her as a woman and as her daughter. The indoctrination I received [at home] set the tone for a sense of shame and guilt about it that lasted until much, much later in life. I asked my 19 year old daughter what she would say to mothers who are anxious about treading this sexual terrain. This is her message to you.
