Pain during sex, or dyspareunia, can cause problems in a couple's sexual relationship. Painful intercourse can have negative emotional effects in addition to the physical pain. There are many effective treatment options available so patients should discuss their symptoms with a physician. In many cases, a woman can experience pain during sex if there is not sufficient vaginal lubrication. In these cases, the pain can be resolved if the female becomes more relaxed, if the amount of foreplay is increased, or if the couple uses a sexual lubricant.

What Women Need to Know About Pain During Sex

Female Pain During Sex (Dyspareunia)
Whilst it's not a topic many of us discuss, sex can sometimes prove a real pain for some women. In fact, around a third of younger and half of older women have suffered from the problem, according to the Sexual Advice Association. As well as discomfort, pain during intercourse can lead to problems in relationships, loss of intimacy and even depression. The good news is that many of these problems can be treated effectively by your GP or after a referral to a gynaecologist - so don't suffer in silence!

When Sex Is Painful
Depending on what is causing your pain, there are several treatments, ranging from prescribing medication to keep endometriosis from growing or to shrink a fibroid -- to laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery to remove scar tissue or cysts. A frank discussion with your medical provider will help to elucidate the causes and treatment options for dyspareunia.
