By abandoning realism in favour of fantasy, superhuman powers and humour, films such as Revenge are redefining the tropes of the genre. So far, so deja vu; but the twist here is that the full-frontal display does not belong to the usual hapless female quarry but to Richard, a sociopathic alpha male who has been cornered in his luxury villa in the desert by Jennifer, the cute girlfriend he pushed off a cliff after one of his buddies raped her. On the one hand, what could be more empowering than watching a woman wreaking violent vengeance on her abusers? Unlike MeToo accusers, who have to go through the courts yet another ordeal or make do with naming and shaming, the rape-revenge protagonist can let rip with Old Testament vengeance. The subsequent relationship she forms with her rapist foreshadows some of the questions asked of MeToo accusers. Why did she go on to have consensual sex with her attacker?

The movie, which was released in theatres on Christmas and came to streaming on January 15th, centers on a med-school dropout named Cassie—a flinty, inscrutable Carey Mulligan—who works in a coffee shop, lives with her parents, and spends her nights going to bars and night clubs and pretending to be dangerously, blindly intoxicated. Be warned: this piece will delve into its twisty plot in detail. When men take her back to their places—under the pretense of helping her—she rejects their advances, begs to go home, and then, when they persist, switches off the slurring and asks, in a cold and sober voice, what they are doing. All of this—her strange, stalled existence, her brazen vigilantism, the depression that has hollowed her from the inside out—stems from the loss of her best friend, Nina, who died by suicide a word that is never explicitly used to describe her death after being publicly raped at a party, when she and Cassie were in medical school together.

And I get that. Turns out, now is precisely the time for this film. Fargeat displays a masterful balance of tone and pacing, as well as a super-stylish visual flair and a heightened ear for sound design.
